Dear AOL Users :

You might find that images on your machine don't look as good as images viewed through non-AOL ISPs. This is due to AOL's use of additional compression in images.

Because this site and others built by careful webmasters already optimize images for an appropriate level of compression, the additional AOL compression takes decent images and makes them look pretty horrible. If you are experiencing this phenomenon, please follow these instructions to iturn off AOL's additional compression.

For AOL 3.0 or 4.0 machines :

(1) Bring up AOL

(2) Click on "Members" in AOL 3 or the "MY AOL" tab in AOL 4

(3) Click on "Preferences"

(4) Click on the "WWW" button

(5) Select "Web Graphics" from the folder tab at the top of that section

(6) Make sure the "Use Compressed Graphics" box is UNCHECKED!!!

(7) Click "Apply"

(8) OK Then, check the gemechanical.com page and see if it looks better.

Thanks much for trying the above. You'll see pages as they're meant to be seen (for the most part -- there are other AOL-only quirks but this is a biggie) and hopefully have a more enjoyable time browsing the Internet.

If you find that browsing is a lot slower, you can always go back to the compressed images. For that matter, you can even turn off image loading in both Netscape and Internet Explorer.

NS 4.0 -- Preferences>Advanced>uncheck automatically load images

NS 3.0 -- Options>make sure "Autoload images" is unchecked (little check mark next to text)

IE 4.0 -- View>Internet Options>Advanced>Scroll down to multimedia and unselect "Show pictures"

IE 3.0 -- View>Options>General>unselect "Show Pictures"
